A1. Hello friends! I’m Mike Allton, sometimes known as the @BloggingBrute because of how insanely fast I’m able to publish content. 😉 #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A1a. I work full time for @Agorapulse as their Brand Evangelist, and I’ve been writing & speaking about the online marketing biz since the ‘90’s. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
Q2. Is blogging even for me? How do you know if you should start a blog? Is it ever too late to take up blogging? Why or why not? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/viiyshN88I
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A2. I could gather that this is a very personal question. I think you have to play to your strengths. #WinnieSun
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A2a. Some people like writing machine @mrleonardkim can write on a whim, vs. people like me – it takes a long long time – it’s not my natural strength. I’m better at video, tweets, and short posts #WinnieSun
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A2. I'm just like @winniesun – I love live streaming and doing videos but I know that there's a ton of value in blogging so I always try to recap Lights, Camera, Live in a blog post. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A2a. If ppl ask you questions like “How did you do that?” That’s an opportunity to share your knowledge! If you have recommendations that can help others, then that’s another opportunity to get started with #blogging. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A2b. It’s never too late to start blogging. As long as you have a strategy and your content pyramid (h/t @mike_allton) in place, you’re on the right track. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A2. The fact is, every business needs written content, whether it’s in the form of blog posts, articles, FAQs, white papers, landing pages or emails. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A2a. If it makes sense for your target audience, publishing blog content that creates brand awareness, answers industry and product questions, and ultimately generates traffic, leads and sales is smart. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A2b. Of course, it’s important to note that blogging is just one type of content – there’s also video and audio. And interestingly, if you and a guest talk for an hour on a Facebook Live, you can turn that into an epic 10,000 word blog post! #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A2c. So while I prefer to write and will be talking about writing blog content, video can be turned into written content easily, and is a powerful medium itself! So @heystephanie will be talking a lot from that perspective. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
Q3. The writer’s block struggle is real! Where do you start? Where do you find inspiration on what to write about? How specific should you get when deciding the topic of your blog / blog posts? What are the pros / cons of having a niche subject? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/8snLAqCMkK
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A3. Agree, it’s hard to come up with fresh, relevant topics. Recently I’ve been writing articles on topics that I’ve been speaking about on @GDLA. They are important, topical personal finance questions that fit perfectly with my @Forbes column. #WinnieSun
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A3. Use the 10×10 Formula: Jot down Top 10 FAQs and 10 Should Ask Questions about your business, product, or service. I get a ton of ideas from the #SocialMedia Strategist group on Facebook – https://t.co/MUc0Gx0A4p #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A3a. I learned from @mike_allton that it’s best to create a Content Pyramid that is built off of 12 pieces of content – https://t.co/I4l3jsEkmO #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A3. Writer’s Block is a plague on all our houses, but it doesn’t have to be! The system I use for tracking ideas also ensures that I never lack for things to write about. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A3a. I use @Evernote to store all my ideas and make it a point to put every idea for content that comes to me into a note immediately so I don’t forget about it. With diligence, you’ll accumulate hundreds of ideas. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A3b. I get ideas for blog content from social media conversations, Quora questions, @Buzzsumo research, comments from readers, books I read, films I watch… life… #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A3c. Generally, the more laser-focused you can get with your content and target audience, the better. Everything you write will resonate more, and it’ll be easier for you to create because you’ll know who you’re writing for. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A3d. If you’re writing about “Marketing” for “Businesses” that’s too wide. It’s impossible for your content and site to develop authority. If, instead, you write about “FB Live Video” for “Social Media Agency Owners”, you have plenty to talk about but it’s defined. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A3e. Without a defined niche, developing authority (i.e. traffic & sales) takes longer and might never achieve what you want. On the other hand, there may be things you want to write or talk about that are outside that niche. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
Q4. How often should you post new content? What frequency formulas tend to work the best? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/j0DBgSxtWu
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A4. Oh goodness, can you see my head hiding under a rock right now? I know it’s better to produce more content more often, but writing isn’t my strength so I don’t write as much as producing other types of content. #WinnieSun
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A4. As a live streamer, I broadcast twice a month and then follow up with a blog recap. I don’t create new blog posts as often as I would like bc of client work. However, I actively promote evergreen blog posts using @Agorapulse to consistently drive traffic. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A4. The first question to ask is how quickly do you want to see success? Assuming you’re creating 10x quality content, the faster you publish the better. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A4a. @Hubspot did a study a while back and found that, on average, businesses needed to have 50+ pieces of content published to begin to see exponential improvements in traffic, leads and sales. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A4b. If you publish weekly, it might take you 12 months to begin to see real results from content marketing. If you can publish 2 – 3 times a week, you can cut that down to 3 – 6 months. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
Q5. Finding your writing style should be easy… right? What questions should you ask yourself when trying to find your written voice? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/dheERAfZhH
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A5. I just try to write as I speak or the voice in my head. I cover various finance topics which can sometimes be intimidating or overwhelming so I try to keep it relevant and relatable. As if we were sitting, talking as friends. #WinnieSun
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A5. All Lights, Camera, Live episodes are transcribed into blog posts so I try to convey the same personality while educating + entertaining readers. In most cases, I imagine as if I’m geeking out with a friend. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A5. Voice. That’s an important topic! And there are two aspects to it – the ‘voice’ that you as an individual portray, and the ‘voice’ or underlying message conveyed by your brand. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A5a. Start with your brand, whether it’s your business or your personal brand, and consider what your core values are. What do you stand for? Who do you help? What issues do you solve? And of course who are you talking to? #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A5b. At @Agorapulse, we’re working mostly with #SocialMedia Agencies so our tone and voice needs to be professional and authoritative, yet also fun-loving. This is social media after all. 😉 #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A5c. Now think about you personally. You need to determine your own voice and style that reflects who you are, but clearly incorporates and doesn’t deviate too much from your brand voice. What are some of your own characteristics? How would someone describe you? #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A5d. For most of us, our writing voice and style really should be as simple as a reflection of how we talk to people in person or over the phone. When I’m on live video or speaking on stage or writing a blog post, I *sound* the same everywhere. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A5e. Writing pretty much exactly how you would speak to someone, and having that targeted audience in mind while you’re speaking, will make your writing come faster and easier. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
Q6. What’s the best structure when writing your blog posts? How long should the ideal post be? What are the most imperative things to keep in mind when writing content? What additions (images, gifs, videos, etc.) help capture the attention of your audience the most? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/L3aGPatEuf
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A6. For my articles, I try to write them long enough to cover all the topics without being too long & excessively wordy. I wrap the article up w/ a video to further increase interest. Some people prefer to read, some prefer to watch, I like giving the audience options. #WinnieSun
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A6. I use the 4MAT Formula – What is your topic about? Why is this important to the reader? How will this impact your reader? What happens if they follow your advice? What happens if they DON’T? #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A6a. Long enough to convey your point ☺️ With blog recaps of LCL, I easily hit more than 1500 words bc of the transcript which helps with SEO.
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A6b. Remember the four learning styles: Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Digital. V – <3 pictures, graphs, charts, color – video! A – Add sound bites, podcast version, alliteration for key pts. K – Offer hands-on exercises. D – Create a checklist/quiz #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A6. Every blog post should use section “headings” to help readers see those important signposts where you’re making significant points. Beyond that, structure is 100% up to you. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A6a. If it helps, you can begin creating the equivalent of 5-paragraph essays where you have an introduction, 3 points each with a couple examples, and a conclusion. That will typically get you to 750 words. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A6b. But 750 or fewer words in a blog post isn’t ideal. If you want that content to rank well in Google and drive good traffic, leads and sales in the future, it’ll need to be at least 1250 words. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A6c. Consider that the most effective content for ranking well and accumulating lots of social activity is in the thousands of words because that article likely took the time to go into depth on the topic and was share-worthy. It was 10X better! #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A6d. When you’re writing, keep these imperatives in mind:
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
1. Write clear, short sentences. Give your thoughts room to breathe.
2. Consider your target audience and present information in the order they need it.
3. Read it out loud to catch bad writing.
#WinnieSun
A6e. Imagery is an essential part of #blogging. Every blog post requires a featured image that welcomes the reader into the post, sets the stage, and is associated with every share. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A6f. Another survey from @Hubspot found that articles which included images every 75 – 150 words were shared more. Not because they simply had more images, but because breaking up your text entices readers to KEEP READING. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A6g. Here’s a recent article that will help you figure out where and how to find and create amazing images for your own blog posts: https://t.co/v511QfT89a #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
Q7. Build it and they will come! How do you find / build your audience? What are the most effective ways of promoting your blog? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/9x2f7prAQ9
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A7. I think many of you here would agree that social media is an effective way to share your content. And, of course, when amazing friends like @DrJoyceKnudsen @LisaMLoeffler @MarshaCollier and you help share our content, even better!
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A7. Since I crowdsource ideas from the Strategist group, that’s where we have the built-in audience. You can also find your audience by joining niche communities and offer solutions to common questions. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A7a. After we’ve published a blog recap, we promote the link in the comments section of the live video. When we post in the comments, all of the viewers get a notification. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A7b. Other promotional tactics include: sharing to FB groups, email list, @Pinterest, @Twitter, @Agorapulse Queue, etc. If you use Pinterest, I highly recommend using @TailwindApp and leveraging Tribes. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A7. While I love Field Of Dreams, the famous quote does NOT apply to blogs or websites or content in general. Audiences won’t discover you without help. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A7a. There are lots of ways you can grow an audience but #SocialMedia is certainly the easiest place to start. You can follow others in your industry and start engaging with their content. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A7b. As your own audience grows, share your latest content as a way to start and spark conversation. Don’t set out to drive traffic – that doesn’t work. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A7c. The real traffic drivers are Search & Email, so that’s where you want to focus long-term. Here’s a full checklist on Blog Promotion: https://t.co/munt8Ec6AQ #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
Q8. Does the platform matter? What are the best tips to keep in for organizing your site content? Do you have to have a blog site instead of just posting straight to social media? Why or why not? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/Q7iAdfjPPJ
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A8. I’d love to hear the different opinions on this question. For me, I’ve been focusing mainly on @Forbes and @LinkedIn. What about you? #WinnieSun
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A8. Platform matters in terms of SEO, maintenance, and customization. Some platforms are easy to customize while others require ongoing maintenance. I used to be on WP but got tired of plugins crashing so I switched to Squarespace. It suits my needs #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A8a. One tip that @mike_allton suggested for my site was to replace the “Most Recent” blog post section on my homepage w/ Most Popular bc those posts have the most social proof. Brilliant! I’m also a fan of organizing content into Beginner, Intermediate, + Advanced. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A8b. Posting on social media can quickly get buried with new content. By having a blog, you’re creating a destination where readers can dive deeper into your content. #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/tr3zjbr1tH
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A8. Interestingly, a few years ago, @Sitesell did a series of studies that looked at the performance of content-based sites by platform. The clear differentiator wasn’t the platform itself, but rather the guidance that went with it. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A8a. If you put a plan into place and build content aligned to that plan, it doesn’t matter if you’re using WordPress or something else. The #ContentStrategy I teach uses Content Pyramids: https://t.co/K26x4FaGSb #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/Cym1DiWZOU
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A8b. Part of that plan will be a determination of where you publish, but virtually all long-form content needs to be published to your own website where you own and control it. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A8c. One option with long-form content is to syndicate it. Publish it to your blog and then copy it to Medium or LinkedIn or Facebook Notes. Or the reverse. Just be sure to test and monitor results. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
Q9. Show me the money! How do you know when your blog is ready to implement monetization strategies? What avenues of monetization works best for blogging? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/sF8lIeegz6
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A9. I don’t monetize my blog so I’m useless on this question. 🙂 #WinnieSun
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A9. If you have a good handle on traffic and SEO, then that would be a great opportunity to look into monetization. @mike_allton wrote an epic blog post for LCL on how to use your DSLR for livestreaming that has consistently contributed to affiliate income. #WinneSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A9a. If there's a product or service that you absolutely love, there might be an opportunity for you to sign up as an affiliate. Another option is incorporating Amazon affiliate links. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A9. This is a great question! Timing really depends on a lot of factors so it’s unique to everyone. Are you getting good traffic? How are you monetizing? What is your audience used to? #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A9a. First, avoid monetizing immediately. Give yourself time to build up an audience and get used to writing and publishing content. And give Google time to learn about your site and area of authority. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A9b. Of course this doesn’t apply to businesses that have products or services to sell. Of course you’re monetizing those BUT you don’t want to be overly promotional in your content. Strive to educate, engage and entertain always. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A9c. Watch some of the FB Lives from @heystephanie and you’ll see her providing value and helping others and very, very rarely saying anything at all from a monetization perspective. Her content demonstrates her expertise and people come to her as a result. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A9d. When it comes to specific techniques, the easiest to implement first are “active” where you’re selling your time or a service, but that doesn’t scale well. Product sales scale easily but take more time to develop. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A9e. Affiliate and advertising revenue is more “passive” in nature but generally aren’t as lucrative. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A9f. The most effective monetization strategy is a combo where you’re creating digital products like courses or ebooks that can sell & scale easily. Like my #blogging planner: https://t.co/YU0Ww9aHCj #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
Q10. How can you use your blog to position yourself as an expert in your field? Do the same strategies that position you as an expert work to help drive clients to your business? If not, what else should you be doing? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/n3r21jgPcJ
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A10. Written content is evergreen. If it’s well-written and smart content, it can be used to position yourself as a subject expert. #WinnieSun
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A10a. For example, I’ve written articles on retirement plans galore and many people reach out to me with questions on how to establish these sort of plans. This helps generate business aka revenue. #WinnieSun
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A10. Follow @mike_allton’s Content Pyramid structure to showcase the breadth and depth of your expertise on a particular subject. If you write 12 articles that helps a reader go from Beginner to Advanced, then you’ve become the hero for that reader. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A10a. Blogging has helped nurture relationships with clients bc they feel as if they’re getting new tutorials and updates on what’s happening on social. If anything, live streaming is what’s really helped in winning new business. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A10b. When potential clients see that you’re confident on camera, then they’re confident that you can help them achieve their goals. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A10. There are two ways that blog content creates and drives authority: Search Traffic and Conversations. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A10a. When you focus on creating content that answers questions people are actually asking, Google rewards you with traffic and that traffic gets to learn from you and becomes aware of your authority. Then they convert to customers. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A10b. And when you have that same content, you can use it yourself! Whether you’re on social media or email or even face-to-face conversations, if someone asks something that you’ve written about, you can send them a link! Like I’ve already done here in this chat. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
Q11. What are the best ways to create content that opens opportunities for and inspires your followers to share your blog? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/ZowDvGGve0
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A11. One of the best ways to encourage sharing is to include or quote individuals in your article that add value. For example, when I’m quoted or mentioned in an article, I try to share it with enthusiasm! #WinnieSun
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A11. Read Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger – @j1berger. People are compelled to share with others when products or ideas highlight any of the 6 STEPPS: Social Currency, Triggers, Emotions, Public, Practical Value, Story. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A11a. I love adding "tweetable" quotes with @clicktoweet, images, videos, and GIFs to break up long paragraphs. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A11. This is where you need to think about and understand the psychology of your audience. Do they tend to post to social media? (Not everyone does.) If so, what do they share? People tend to post content that either makes them look smart or funny. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A11a. Assuming your target audience does in fact post to social and would post content from a brand like yours, you should create content that they’ll look smart sharing. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A11b. Do make it EASY for your audience to share your content! Include social sharing buttons, include a featured image, and if it makes sense, include a tall image for Pinterest. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
Q12. How can a blog help humanize your business and give your potential clients an idea of your voice and personality? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/EOJGyAgcXc
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A12. People do business with people they trust. A blog is just another way for people to get to know you. Let people better understand your voice, and in my case, with video, this adds another opportunity for people to get to know me. #WinnieSun
— #WinnieSun ® ☀️ #Vidcon speaker (@winniesun) July 10, 2019
A12. If you can help a client solve a problem and explain it in a way that is easy to follow in a blog post, then that helps you build instant rapport. #WinnieSun
— Stephanie Liu #VidConUS (@heystephanie) July 10, 2019
A12. Make sure that every single post is written by an individual and list them as the author. Avoid ghost writers or “team effort” articles whenever possible. #WinnieSun
— Mike Allton (@mike_allton) July 10, 2019
A12a. It is OK to bring in guest articles, paid contributors, and to even collaborate on content. But if you want a consistent voice then you’ll want a consistent author. #WinnieSun
